3D currently a 'science experiment' says Phil Spencer.
Microsoft Games Studios' corporate VP Phil Spencer remains sceptical about 3D gaming, believing that it's not yet ready for the mainstream.
"As an entertainment company, we're trying to do things that millions of people can go enjoy today," Spencer told CNN in a recent interview. "And for better or for worse, people just don't really have TVs in their house right now that are going to do 3-D in a way that's going to work."
Spencer's comments come as Sony continue to aggressively expand and pursue the 3D market – and the corporate VP made a thinly veiled swipe at Microsoft's console competitor. "As a corporate mandate, I don't need to sell you a new TV," said Spencer, "That's not part of my business model. Other companies maybe have that part of their business model. I don't."
He was more positive about Nintendo's forthcoming 3DS, praising its ability to give a 3D experience without glasses, but said that attempts to get 3D working on the Xbox 360 – namely Arkham Asylum's recent effort – haven't been so convincing. "It felt a little more like a science experiment than something that's going to go touch millions of people," he said.
Spencer did go on to say that 3D does have a future in games. "Clearly, we're not going to ignore 3-D," he concluded, "I think it is something that will play a role in entertainment."
The Xbox 360 has played host to 3D games before in the shape of the aforementioned Arkham Asylum and Avatar, and Call of Duty: Black Ops – what could be one of the console's top sellers this year – also supports 3D.
