World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Preorders Bypass Retail

Fans can download the upcoming expansion directly from Blizzard and play the moment the servers

At Blizzcon 2010's opening ceremonies this morning, Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime announced that, for the first time in the MMO's history, fans can preorder the upcoming Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft directly from Blizzard.
The developer will soon begin accepting preorders for the expansion on its official store. From there you'll be able to download all of the necessary files in advance of Cataclysm's December 7 release. Then, come launch day, anyone who preordered from Blizzard shouldn't have to endure the usual installation and patching process.
Not only will subscribers get to play the moment the servers switch over, but they'll also be able to skip out on the whole midnight launch experience at retail. Whether that's a plus or a minus likely depends on your stance on physical media vs. downloadable games -- or how cold it is in your neck of the woods come December 7.
