Michael Pachter sees the Wii rebounding and having a strong November and December.
Though its sales figures in recent months may be less than we're used to seeing, especially compared with the increased sales of both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii will be the top selling game console in both November and December, according to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter.
"I don't think that Nintendo's holiday season is in trouble at all," he told IndustryGamers. "The Wii has dropped from first to third, but the new models for Xbox 360 and the launch of PS3 Move had something to do with that, and it's likely only temporary. I think that Mr. Iwata is right when he says that the Wii is more of a holiday purchase, as the core audience has long been satisfied, and the more casual audience comprises the much larger portion of the addressable market."
The sudden resurgence in sales will be a result of a number of things: "With effective marketing, a slew of great games, and some likely support at retail, I expect the Wii to once again become the best selling console in November and December," Pachter explained.
As for Nintendo's other platform, the DS will have some issues both because of the 3DS on the horizon and the success of the iPod Touch. It also doesh't help that "the new XL and regular DSi models haven't really captured anyone's imagination." Once the 3DS releases, however, Pachter expects that "handheld sales will rebound nicely."
We unfortunately won't get the same sort of numbers from the NPD Group that we're used to, what with the cutback in the data that's being revealed each month. We'll have to rely on Nintendo to provide us with sales figures for the upcoming holiday figure; should the Wii sell as well as Pachter believes it will, Nintendo likely won't have issue with letting us all know about it.
