First Kinect Prototype Cost $30,000

Over 1,000 employees helped bring the device to market.

We already know that Microsoft is preparing to invest big in marketing and promotion for Kinect, but now we're learning more about just how much investment went into the device's creation as well. The New York Times reports that the first prototype for Kinect cost Microsoft a whopping $30,000 to build. The iterative process of bringing it to market involved 1,000 workers handling different aspects. So when you're plunking down $150 for Kinect, a price at which Microsoft states it will turn a profit, you could remind yourself that those hard-working people gave you a $29,850 discount.

Microsoft is bullish on Kinect, stressing its differences from other devices on the market. Joel Johnson of Gizmodo remarked that it's "the first thing out of the consumer side of Microsoft in a long, long time where they are in front of everyone else." The article also clarifies that if the device can't tell the difference between two players (like identical twins wearing the same clothes), it simply asks players to identify themselves. We'll be trying it out in the office soon, so stick around for our impressions.
