Top 13 Scariest Video Games

It’s October. The leaves are falling, pumpkins are being smashed and video game nerds are breaking out all their scary video games from the past. Which are the scariest though? In this list we will go through what video games frightened the gamer to the core of his being while trying to find their way through the game. Some games just plain nailed the spooky quality needed to make a game scary by accentuating the moody soundtrack and making the enemies horrifying to look at. Some of the choices on this list may not be obvious, but on second look the reader will understand what could make a simple game like Pac-Man for example, so scary, which we will start off with first.

13. Pac-man

Pac-man may seem like a simple game and it is. It’s the greatest simple game of all time. But let’s think about it a little bit more. You are a floating head trapped in pitch black maze with four ghosts chasing after you. Is this not the definition of hell? Spending the rest of your life as a moving mouth running away from ghosts that never tire from trying to exterminate you from existence? With this in mind, I think we now all understand how scary of a game Pac-Man was. We like playing the game, sure. But who would honestly want to live the life of Pac Man?

12. Alone in the Dark

Alone in the Dark was unprecedented for its time. The music was suspenseful at every turn. The voice overs were dramatic and dark. Doors would randomly close behind you, and you never knew what was behind the next corner waiting to suck your blood. This 3D adventure started a slew of games like the Resident Evil series, where you were alone in a house trying to solve mysteries and find artifacts. Actually laying Alone in the Dark in the dark would accentuate the already tense mood of being in a massive house reading Latin scripture relating to biblical demonic prose. Making this game even more scary was seeing yourself from the prospective of zombies inside the house and you drive into this nefarious manor. Alone in the Dark was the first of it’s kind and still gives spooks to those who have played it thoroughly in the past.

Zelda: OoT, Nintendogs Apparently Part of 3DS Launch Line-Up

Steel Diver and PilotWings Resort are also possibly set for the 3DS's launch.

Following Nintendo's financial results meeting with investors yesterday, they also quietly released a launch schedule of internally developed games for the Nintendo 3DS...and it looks like it's given us the first indication of what games will be ready to fill out the 3DS launch line-up.

As the schedule (via GoNintendo) reconfirms, the 3DS is launching in Japan on February 26 and in North America some time in March. But the schedule also has The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, PilotWings Resort, Nintendogs + Cats, and Steel Diver all listed for a "spring 2011" release in Japan, indicating they'll likely be ready for release along with the 3DS -- or at least very soon after. Along with those games, Kid Icarus: Uprising is listed for a vague "2011" release, while StarFox 64, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, and Mario Kart are all listed as TBA.

Kinect Preorders On Amazon Jump To $250

How much would you pay to get your hands on Microsoft’s Kinect motion sensor on the day it becomes available?

It turns out that Kinect may be selling well as the regular stock of the standalone Kinect appears to be sold out at BestBuy.com and Amazon. According to analysts, Microsoft began mass-producing Kinect back in August and ramped the volume to 2 million units in September, which is in line with previous reports that Microsoft expects to sell about 4 million units this Christmas season.

The numbers suggest that there should be enough supply to sell a Kinect device to everyone who wants (and can afford) one. So it is somewhat surprising that Amazon itself does not list the Kinect as available anymore. Instead, the interested buyer is forwarded to a list of sellers who are, at the time of this writing, offering the standalone Kinect device, which has a suggested retail price of $150, for prices between $250 and $280.
I don’t quite expect an Ebay frenzy after Kinect is released given the potential supply and we may not see Kinect selling for thousands of dollars (anyone remember the $15,000 PS3?) in online auctions, but a price of $280 is certainly a sign of confidence, even if one has to wonder whether a $300 4GB Xbox 360/Kinect bundle isn’t the better choice: Keep the Kinect for yourself and give the Xbox 360 away as a Christmas present.

Dynasty Warriors 7 Officially Confirmed for Xbox 360

Dynasty Warriors 7 is a game that’s frequently been taking headlines recently. Since it’s unveiling at the Tokyo Games Show in September Koei Tecmo Games had remained fairly tight-lipped about the game until a Japanese press conference last week, where a whole slew of new details were launched at the series’ fans, mostly to a positive response. One important detail remained without clarification however, until today, when the European arm of the publisher took to the stage at the London MCM Expo and officially confirmed that Dynasty Warriors 7 was also in development for Xbox 360.

No Wii Price Cut This Holiday

Satoru Iwata rules out lower price for this holiday.

Nintendo has ruled out the possibility of a Wii console price cut this fall and instead will focus on special retailer deals or adding software or accessories to the package.

When asked about a possible price cut today in Tokyo, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told the Associated Press there are no current plans. "Of course, we cannot say it will never happen, but we are not thinking of it for the near future," he said.

"Those who really wanted it would have already bought it so now we need to reach those who considered it but never got around to buying it."

A price cut would certainly help Nintendo fend off declining Wii hardware and software sales. The company saw sales fall 33 percent for the second fiscal quarter.

Nintendo will release a new Red Wii bundle this holiday that includes the new Wii Remote Plus controller, a hybrid of the original Wii controller and the Wii MotionPlus add-on.

The company will also look to boost profits when it releases the Nintendo 3DS worldwide early next year.

PS3 Sales Good, PSP Sales Not So Good

PSP sales fall 50 percent, PS3 sees increase for Sony's second quarter.

Sony today revealed its second quarter 2010 fiscal year results. As a whole, the company posted a net income of $385 million, a significant jump from the $327 million loss that occurred during the same time period in fiscal 2009.

The company said its Networked Products & Services division, which includes the game and PC business, was a major contributor for the turnaround. Sales were up 5 percent and the segment posted an operative income of $86 million, a major improvement from the $730 million loss during the same quarter last fiscal year.

The game business saw sales fall 12 percent, however, while PC jumped 23 percent.

"While game business sales in total decreased year-on-year, sales of PlayStation 3 hardware and software increased year-on-year and benefited from the introduction of PlayStation Move in the current quarter."

Nintendo Shows Improved 3DS Shop Interface

Nintendo Shows Improved 3DS Shop Interface?

The digital shopping experience on the DSi is notoriously slow and clunky, with lengthy waits accompanying most screen transitions. Nintendo is going to be making some fixes for the 3DS version of the shop.

During an investors briefing today, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata showed a demonstration video for the 3DS shopping channel. You can view the clip for yourself in this video from the event by forwarding to the 40 minute mark.

As explained by Iwata during the demonstration, the shop interface is split into categories, which he referred to as racks. These racks contain software corresponding to a theme -- for example, "Mario Games."

Select a rack, and you're instantly taken into a list of games available on the rack. Iwata noted that the transitions between screens is quick. You can see this for yourself in the video feed.

Mega Man Creator Leaves Capcom

Head of development Keiji Inafune announces departure from company of 23 years.

Keiji Inafune is currently head of R&D at Capcom and CEO of Capcom online gaming subsidiary Daletto. This will remain true only through the end of the month. Inafune announced via his blog today that at the end of the month, he will be taking leave of his posts at both companies. He did not say where he would end up.

Inafune entered Capcom 23 years ago, initially working as a character designer. He rose to become a major producer at the company, eventually heading up all R&D efforts and also taking on CEO duties at Daletto, a Capcom subsidiary that operates online games like Monster Hunter Frontier Online.

Recently, Inafune has been the source of some controversial comments regarding the Japanese game industry. At a Dead Rising 2 Tokyo Game Show party last year, he declared the Japanese industry dead after having seen the offerings on display at the show.

Battle.net Could Play Host to Activision Games, Says Blizzard

Could the next Call of Duty support Blizzard's online service? It's not as far-fetched as you might think.

Since the launch of StarCraft 2 earlier this year, Blizzard's Battle.net matchmaking system has proven to be an invaluable tool for communicating with friends and organizing matches across multiple Blizzard products. But what if there were more than just Blizzard games on Battle.net? Greg Canessa, project director for Blizzard's online service, discussed exactly that in a recent interview with Gamasutra.

"I'll tell you this, Bobby Kotick and all the folks at Activision are very supportive of Battle.net and what we're doing," Canessa said, calling Battle.net "one of the top five strategic initiatives going on at Activision Blizzard."

He continued, "Today, [the focus is] Blizzard games, and making sure Diablo III is a kick-ass online experience, and making sure we evolve and add features of StarCraft II, make sure that WoW kicks ass for Cataclysm and beyond."

"Someday, maybe we add other titles in there, who knows," he added. "When we really feel like we've delivered that great set of experiences for Blizzard games, and we feel that we've grown the team... when I've got that sustainability, when we really feel like we've got that dialed in and nailed down, who knows what the future holds."

Ghost Trick spooking DS Jan. 11

Capcom bringing Ace Attorney creator's latest detective-style handheld effort to North America early next year.

It has been more than a year since Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi first began talking about his latest zetetic handheld effort, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. And while the game didn't exactly light up the Japanese sales charts upon its release for the DS in June, North American audiences can soon begin peeling back the game's mysteries, as Capcom today announced a January 11, 2011, release for the title.
A blend of the adventure and puzzle genres, Ghost Trick tells the story of an amnesiac ghost who attempts to solve the mystery behind his own death while saving the lives of others. As the deceased Sissel, players can take control of objects in the world to accomplish various challenges, with puzzle examples including making a bike float through the air to scare the living or possessing a light switch to zap an assassin.

320GB PS3 soon to be sold solo

Highest capacity HDD-equipped console will sell for $350 a la carte starting today, $50 more than 160GB version, $50 less than 320GB Move bundle.

In August, Sony announced it was increasing the capacity of the PlayStation 3's hard drive by releasing 160GB and 320GB models of the console. But while the former was available solo for the same $300 price point as the discontinued 120GB model, the latter was only available as party of a $400 bundle, which included the PlayStation Eye camera, Move controller, and minigame compilation Sports Champions.
Today, Sony announced that the 320GB PS3 will soon be available on its own for $350. Stand-alone units of the console (pictured) will begin shipping today and will arrive in stores in the near future.
The 320GB and 160GB models are just the latest in a long line of reconfigurations of the PlayStation 3, which debuted in 2006 with 60GB and 20GB of hard drive space. Since then, 40GB, 80GB, 120GB, and 250GB HDD-equipped versions have been released. Along the way, the console both lost and gained functionalities, with the backward compatibility of early models disappearing and the console recently receiving native Netflix playback.

Xbox 360 Sales Jump 38 Percent

Lifetime sales reach 44.6 million units worldwide.

Xbox 360 sales grew 38 percent during Microsoft's first-quarter 2011 fiscal year, which ended on Sept. 30, 2010.

The software giant reported it sold 2.8 million consoles, up from the 2.1 million sold in the first-quarter of fiscal 2010. To date, Microsoft has sold 44.6 million units worldwide since the console's launch in 2005.

Halo Reach also continued to see strong sales. Since its release in September, the game generated approximately $350 million of revenue during the quarter. Unit sales were not disclosed.

Halo: Reach saw first-day sales top $200 million in the United States and Europe.

Microsoft also said it saw "strong" Xbox Live membership growth in the quarter, but did not provide any data on the number of users.

Darth Vader in Games: A Visual History

We celebrate Star Wars' greatest villain in pixels and polygons.

The sullen cyborg Sith Lord of the original Star Wars trilogy has starred in films, comics, books and nightmares since 1977, but Darth Vader's appearances in video games has often been overshadowed by the likes of Luke and company.

Despite having one of the most recognizable visages in geekdom, a voice imitated more than Richard Nixon, Arnold Schwarzenegger and ALF combined, and recently topping IGN's Top 100 Star Wars Characters list, Darth Vader has had a somewhat spotty career in gaming, with appearances ranging from awesome to downright debasing. We pried open IGN's carbonite-sealed vaults and thawed out some of Darth's more memorable pixilated moments over the past 30 years for this retrospective. In the pages below we celebrate the man, the mask and the moroseness of Darth Vader.

Be the First in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

And avoid the midnight nerd-swarm.

The launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is just a little over a month away. This time around, players can preload before the official launch at midnight December 7th. By being able to download the game in advance, players will be able to start blowing through the new content the minute it goes live.
To take advantage of the preload, players need to buy the expansion online and log in at least once to initiate the download.

Blizzard is only selling the standard version online, however. If you want the Collector's Edition, with the art book, sound track and pet, you'll need to purchase through traditional retailers.

Going Ape Over Donkey Kong Country Returns

Nintendo let us tool around with the final version earlier this week. And yes, we love it.

Nintendo held an event earlier this week that gave us lucky game enthusiast professionals the opportunity to plow through as much of Donkey Kong Country Returns as our hands (and our patience) would allow. Of course, I was there front and center, on the first day ready to get my gorilla on.

This hands-on experience showed us the game in full context, complete with the full introduction cutscene that explains the scenario in this Retro Studios-developed revisit to the Rare original platformer. In Donkey Kong Country Returns, DK's banana horde has been stolen. But this time it's by a troupe of tiki critters who've hypnotized all the critters in the jungle to do their bidding. But when one of those tiki dudes tries his hypnotic song on Donkey Kong, it doesn't exactly take…and the first thing you do is send that guy flying with a mean right hook out of your hut.

Now it's up to Donkey Kong and his pal Diddy Kong (complete with Nintendo logo-emblazoned red ball cap) to head through the jungle and take back all the bananas that have been lost along the way, as well as help his hypnotized buddies get back their senses.

Mario All-Stars US Bound

The 25th Anniversary collection is indeed heading our way just in time for the holidays.

Well, now we don't have to be jealous of Japan and Europe anymore, as Nintendo of America has finally revealed that the Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition bundle is coming to North America.

The Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition will be available in limited numbers for $29.99 on December 12th. The bundle will include a disc with Super Mario All-Stars (the Super NES game that featured Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels redone in 16-bit art), as well as a soundtrack CD and an illustrated booklet.

The soundtrack disc will feature music and sound effects from every game considered part of the Super Mario franchise.

Top Ten: Remakes We’d Most Like To See

What with Sonic Adventures getting the re-release treatment, and the likes of Ico and Shadow of Colossus soon to be seen in glorious HD, we at Dealspwn got rather nostalgic and began to wonder what games of old we’d most like to see resurrected on our flat screens. I’m not necessarily talking a like-for-like conversion with a fresh lick of paint, but the return of an old favourite with a brand new outlook on life.
So read on for out Top 10 Remakes We’d Most Like To See, and don’t forget to sign off in the comments and tell us what games you’d like to see resurrected!

10. Zone of the Ender

Hideo Kojima is recognised as the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series, but his best piece of work, in my opinion, is his mecha-classic, Zone of the Enders. It was my first game on the PS2, and I can quite honestly say I’ve yet to be ‘wowed’ by a game as much as ZotE. It was the little touches, like how Orbital Frame Jehuty’s feet sprayed sparks as he careened across stages. I hear Kojima is pondering a new Zone of the Enders title to occupy his next free slot as game director, and I couldn’t be more excited. Just no thirty minute cutscenes or clone sagas, please.

9. Perfect Dark

We’re ignoring Perfect Dark Zero. In fact, it’s ceased to exist, a myth relegated to the untold history of videogames. Perfect Dark was a fantastic game, and while Halo may have popularised the console FPS, I feel Rare laid the foundation. It had it all, a thrilling campaign, replete with X-ray snipers and aliens in sneakers called Elvis. Then the multiplayer, still great, even by today’s standards. Oh, but hire a new writer, as PD Zero’s dialogue almost forced to insert a pair of sewing needles into each ear-drum.

8. Star Wars: TIE Figther

In the past, Star Wars enjoyed a string of great games, and none were better, in my opinion, than TIE Fighter. I’m not even a flight-sim fan. I struggle with the controls. But TIE Fighter was great. Flipping sides to the Empire felt heretical, but deep down, we loved blowing up X-Wings. It was also quite taxing on my poor old 95′ PC, which began to shudder each time I ran the disc! Hopefully, our current crop of consoles and PCs can run an updated version.

7. Killer Instinct

If you’ve followed my writing, you might notice I’m quite the fan of Killer Instinct. I never managed to defeat Eyedol, and if I can’t find an old copy and a spare SNES, then I demand a remake! I worry, however, when I hear of a Killer Instinct reboot, courtesy of Kinect. Unless they solve the chugging lag, I’d rather see an old-school fighter with HD slick visuals. Maybe I’ll finally be able to defeat Eyedol? (I won’t. I’m awful at fighting games)

6. Quake

At the moment, we’re seeing far too many CoD clones on the online circuit. It’s all modern military and leveling up to upgrade your guns. I’m cool with Call of Duty, just not the string of pretenders. Quake, true to its name, shook up conventional multiplayer in 96′, so think of what an updated version might do? What set Quake apart was the level of freedom afforded to movement. You could jump fifty feet into the air, land neatly, all the while spraying rockets into your fellow airborne foes. Come on, id, make it so!

Top 5 possible appearances of the new Xbox 720

It has been five years since the Xbox 360 came on the market. Time flies, and Microsoft will eventually have to launch a new console. Will it be something like the current Xbox 360 console or it will be a handheld, it is still not known. A possible names for this new console could be Xbox 720 or Xbox 3. One of the leaders of Microsoft, Peter Moore, said in 2007. year that his company will be able to produce a new console in 2011.or 2012. depending on what processors will then be current. From then until today, there were no official speeches about the possibility that the market will get new Xbox console. Fans of video games and Microsoft’s gaming platform to date have made a lot of pictures that are supposed to represent the appearance of new consoles, and we have selected our top five.

Van Helsing MMO Might Be in the Works

New virtual world to feature slightly more horrors than Planet Michael.

SEE Virtual Worlds, the group that last month announced they were developing a Michael Jackson-themed virtual world entitled "Planet Michael" is reportedly set to announce that another partnership, this time with Universal Partnerships & Licensing (the licensing part of Universal Studios), is soon to bear fruit. Monster fruit. According to a Hollywood Reporter article, the duo are set to announce a monster-themed massively-multiplayer online virtual world that utilizes the Universal Monsters franchise.

The franchise, which uses the beasts and ghouls of films from the middle part of the 20th century, includes the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man. According to the report, the game, part of SEE Virtual World's Entropia Universe (which includes MindArk's Planet Calypso) will give players the opportunity to fill the role of the oversized-hat-wearing monster-hunter Van Helsing. It will also use a real-cash economy, a system that Project Entropia pioneered and made viable for both the developer and the players. Within the confines of Planet Calypso, players can buy virtual currency, using their real money, to finance their virtual adventures, and can then sell back any virtual currency they earn, potentially netting them a profit.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the horror-themed virtual world, along with Planet Michael, is due out next year. We've reached out to Universal and SEE Virtual Worlds for comment and confirmation.

The GameCube's Rise from the Grave

How Nintendo's purple lunch box just won't stay dead, and may terrorize the 3DS next. (With Top 10 picks for when it does.)

It's been nearly four years since the GameCube died, and yet it shambles on. Through its hardware, through its software – it's just never really disappeared, even after almost half a decade of the Wii replacing it as Nintendo's flagship console. The system's legacy continues, undeterred, crawling constantly forward with undead resolve.

And the 3DS may be this zombie's next meal.

Now, the GameCube hardware itself has certainly slipped out of sight. Our purple lunch boxes have been packed away, traded in for GameStop credit or hidden in closets to collect dust for eternity. But it's undeniable that, in nearly every other way, Nintendo's GameCube has kept a subtle pulse pumping ever since 2006.

The first piece of life support came through the Wii's backwards compatibility with Cube software – to this day everyone who buys a Wii is also getting a hidden Cube inside, as that disc slot dutifully boots up every miniature optical disc placed within. The second is that the Cube's controller has lived on, still utilized by Nintendo with new Wii releases that require more complicated input that the lone Wii Remote can provide – Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, and every single Virtual Console title retain compatibility with the pad.

Medal of Honor Getting Free and Premium DLC on November 2

New multiplayer modes and maps coming for Medal of Honor one week before the release of Black Ops.

Just a week before the release of its biggest competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Medal of Honor will be seeing new downloadable content of both the free and premium varieties on November 2.

The premium downloadable content will include a new King of the Hill-style game mode called Hot Zone. It's playable on two new maps included with the DLC called Hindukush Pass and Korengal Outpost, as well as on redesigned versions of existing maps Shahikot Valley and Helmand Valley. The DLC pack will be available simultaneously on the Xbox Live Marketplace, PlayStation Network, and EA Store (for PC gamers) for $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points.

As for the previously announced free content, it will include a new mode called Clean Sweep that is an "elimination mode," which sounds like a one-life-per-round type affair. Along with this new mode, two new maps -- Bagram Hangar and Khyber Caves -- will be released. Like the Hot Zone mode, Clean Sweep will also work on two redesigned versions of existing maps: in this case, Diwagal Camp and Kabul City Ruins.

The free DLC will be available only to those who purchased new copies of Medal of Honor and have redeemed their one-time-use code included with the game; owners of used copies will need to purchase a code from the Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network. PC gamers, on the other hand, will simply have to look for a new patch that will be available no earlier than November 2.

BioShock 2 DLC Coming to PC

Protector Trials, Minerva's Den coming after all.

2K has announced the BioShock 2 downloadable content Minerva's Den and Protector Trials, and the game patch are coming to PC. The publisher previously said the content would not be coming to PC, but that has now changed.

"When we announced that Protector Trials and Minerva's Den would not be coming out for the PC due to technical and timing issues, we received a lot of feedback (much of it understandably expressing disappointment and anger) about our decision," 2K Community Manager Elizabeth Tobey said.

Minerva's Den adds a new single-player campaign, while the Protector Trials adds new challenge modes. 2K said they're currently bug testing the content and it should be submitted for certification soon. That process can take up to four weeks. It is unclear when this content will be released.

"Often, development is not a smooth and straight forward path. We never want to disappoint our gamers and we will always listen to what you have to say and try to do what's right for you and the game. I want to thank all of you not only for your feedback, but also for your patience and understanding," Tobey added.

Giving in to Peer Pressure in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit

How EA's Autolog could (and should) change the way we compete online.

Online leaderboards have become so common in video games that we take them for granted. If a console or PC game has an online multiplayer component, you can be fairly certain there's a screen hidden in the menus somewhere where you can compare your accomplishments against those of your friends (and the rest of the world). It's a good start, but at a time when your Xbox Live Achievements are popping up in your sister's Twitter feed and your best friend is visiting your Farmville farm three times a day, the idea of the traditional video game leaderboard is becoming more and more antiquated.

That's why EA's Autolog experiment in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is such a welcome change. Rather than hide the leaderboard in a stats menu, the team at Criterion essentially built the game around the idea of constant competition with friends. If you have friends playing Hot Pursuit, and if you're connected to EA's servers, you're constantly being updated about your successes, failures and opportunities. I've been playing around with Hot Pursuit's Autolog system for a couple weeks now, and I've been impressed with how deeply its integrated into the game.

Right from the start menu, Autolog fires up and greets you with tales of your wins and losses. If a friend has just bested you in a certain event, you might see their smug mug slide by with their new time below it.

Wii to be Top Holiday Seller, Analyst Predicts

Michael Pachter sees the Wii rebounding and having a strong November and December.

Though its sales figures in recent months may be less than we're used to seeing, especially compared with the increased sales of both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii will be the top selling game console in both November and December, according to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

"I don't think that Nintendo's holiday season is in trouble at all," he told IndustryGamers. "The Wii has dropped from first to third, but the new models for Xbox 360 and the launch of PS3 Move had something to do with that, and it's likely only temporary. I think that Mr. Iwata is right when he says that the Wii is more of a holiday purchase, as the core audience has long been satisfied, and the more casual audience comprises the much larger portion of the addressable market."

PlayStation Rewards Program Unveiled

Public launch scheduled for Spring 2011.

Sony today unveiled a new loyalty program called PlayStation Rewards, which gives Sony fans a chance to win bonus content.

The amount of rewards given to any one member is based on the level of engagement that person has with the PS3 or PSP, which includes playing new games for the first time, downloading content from the PlayStation Store, downloading music and videos, or taking surveys.

There's a three-tier rewards system in which members progress through, "Select," "Pro" and "Legendary." The more engaged a member is, the better the rewards. The profile page for Rewards members will display a progress meter to show how close they are to the next level.

PlayStation Rewards will begin as an invitation-only beta, which includes early adopters of PlayStation Plus and Gamer Advisory Panel (GAP) members. The beta will start out to only include PS3 owners, but will add PSP at a later date.

The PlayStation Phone

It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real -- but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mockup we hit you with this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and you can see in the photos that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.

The particular model in these shots is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices), and is said to be rather buggy. We're digging into more facts as we speak, but it's likely that much of what we reported earlier is still accurate, and though the device could still be headed for a 2010 release, 2011 is looking much more realistic. Still, there's a lot of time between now and the holidays... so keep your fingers crossed!

Rock Band 2 Song Export Details Revealed

For a $9.99 licensing fee, Rock Band 3 owners can import nearly all of Rock Band 2's 84 tracks.

Rock Band 3 lands on store shelves today, and developer Harmonix just revealed the song export details for Rock Band 2.

In order to import your Rock Band 2 tracks into this year's game, first you'll need to track down the code from the back of the Rock Band 2 instruction manual. From there, simply load up Rock Band 3, go to "Get More Songs" in the main menu, and select the "Redeem Code" option. Then just enter your Rock Band 2 code, pay the $9.99 licensing fee, and you should be all set.

Don't panic if you've managed to lose your Rock Band 2 manual in the two years since the game debuted; EA is offering an export code replacement program. You can score new set of digits either by heading to the official support site for the game or by calling (650) 628-1001.

Now for the bad news: Not all of Rock Band 2's 84-song setlist made the cut for Rock Band 3. As with the first Rock Band, a handful of tracks from Rock Band 2 are non-exportable. That list includes the following:
  • "Let There Be Rock" by AC/DC
  • "Any Way You Want It" by Journey
  • "Battery" by Metallica
  • "Give It Away" by Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • "Spoonman" by Soundgarden
In addition, Rock Band Aide reports that the nine tracks from Harmonix-fronted bands in Rock Band 2 also aren't included in the export. Those tracks aren't lost forever, however, as the developer reportedly plans to release that content as a free download at a later date.

Xbox 360 Guardian of Light gets online co-op, free DLC tomorrow

Square Enix releasing title update tomorrow that will add cooperative play to Lara Croft title; free puzzle pack also arriving; PC, PS3 update coming "soon."

When Square Enix released Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, over the summer, those who bought the first downloadable entry in the Lara Croft series were not able to experience online cooperative play. However, that's going to change tomorrow--for the Xbox 360, at least.
Square Enix said today that it will release a free title update tomorrow for the Xbox 360 version of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light that will add the capability for co-op play online via Xbox Live. The ability was promised when the title was announced but was later delayed.

Further, the publisher said it will release the first of five planned content expansions for the game tomorrow at no cost. The "All the Trappings" DLC will include a new area with puzzles, exploration, and combat. It will be available for free for 30 days.
Those who purchased the title for the PlayStation 3 or PC are going to have to wait longer for the DLC and online co-op patch. According to Square Enix, the title update for those players will be "coming soon."

Back to the Future game out in December

Telltale announces launch month and platforms for its episodic Back to the Future adventure game.

Back to the Future: The Game will launch in December for the PC and Mac, with a PlayStation 3 and iPad version coming later, Telltale Games has announced.

Back to the Future: The Game comes from the developer of Tales of Monkey Island and Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse. As with those games, Back to the Future will span five episodes, with one episode released each month. Telltale secured the deal to make a Back to the Future game back in June, along with the rights to adapt Jurassic Park.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the studio's design director Dave Grossman told GameSpot to expect an experience that advances Telltale's approach to adventure games: "You can expect Back to the Future to be the next step in the evolution that we have been doing for the adventure game--probably a little more accessible and directed. We've been moving things in that direction for a long time."

On the newly launched official site, the PC and Mac versions of the game are available for preorder. The $24.95 (£16) preorder bundle includes Telltale's Puzzle Agent puzzle adventure game, access to a community "insider forum," and a $1 donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. The site is also inviting users to register to receive the first episode for free.

No More Heroes HD Exclusive to PS3

Konami officially confirms U.S. launch, Move support, and more.

Travis Touchdown, the foul-mouthed, beam katana-wielding anime enthusiast, is officially coming to the PlayStation 3 next year. The original No More Heroes, which hit the Wii in 2008, impressed gamers with its over-the-top sense of style, gruesome boss fights, and hilarious video game references. Now, the action is making the jump to the HD space with No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise, exclusive to the PlayStation 3 in North America.

Heroes' Paradise will once again put players in the boots of Travis Touchdown as he fights his way to the top of a ranked assassins association. Heroes' Paradise will include new bosses not available in the original Wii version, as well as PlayStation Move support to keep up the tradition of motion-based attacks.

Heroes' Paradise is scheduled to launch sometime next year. Keep it locked on IGN for more on the wild action game and all your PS3 news.

SEGA's New Sonic Strategy

"It's just such a vital brand for us," says CEO Mike Hayes.

SEGA doesn't want to make any more bad Sonic games.

That's the point SEGA West CEO Mike Hayes, who oversees North America and European development, drove home during an interview with IGN last week. He said the company is making sure it will listen to what fans want going forward.

"It's all part of a general strategy with Sonic where we are passionate about getting Sonic back up to the quality levels we've had historically," Hayes explained. "We've gone through a major segmentation analysis of Sonic and where it would appeal to the different fans."
