Report: Electronic Arts Preparing to Launch EA Sports Subscription Service

Early full game downloads, discounted DLC, more for annual fee.

Rumors have been circulating about a subscription service for EA Sports games for years, and now it appears Electronic Arts is ready to pull the trigger. According to multiple reports, the publisher is preparing to launch EA Sports Subscription Service, giving members access to a variety of digital benefits for anywhere from $15 to $35 per year.

GameSpot and IndustryGamers, among others, report they've obtained a leaked memo from EA Sports that describes the premium service in detail. According to the memo, EA Sports Subscription Service will be sold in tiers with more digital goodies available to those who pay the higher annual fees.

The memo lists benefits of the EA Sports Subscription Service as:
-- Discounts on all downloadable content for participating EA Sports console-based titles.

-- Free and exclusive EA Sports downloadable content for console-based titles.

-- Full downloadable versions of participating titles before they come out in stores.

-- An exclusive "recognition badge" that will appear both in-game and on players' web profiles.

-- The ability to transfer paid content from current titles to future versions of said titles. For example, a course downloaded for Tiger Woods 12 will be available in Tiger Woods 13.

-- Free and exclusive content to extend players' EA Sports experience to the PC and Web.
The memo goes on to detail various pricing levels and features for the service, including $15, $30, and $35. For example, at $15, members would receive a 30% discount on all EA Sports DLC, be able to download full digital versions of new releases three days prior to their retail launch, and receive premium, web-based EA Sports features, such as the FIFA 12 Creative Center, a feature non-members have to pay to access.

All pricing and features were described as "possible," and EA has yet to respond to requests for comment as to the veracity of the memo and/or the impending launch of a premium EA Sports subscription service.
