Company working to root out phishers linked to Modern Warfare 2.
Microsoft has issued a service alert to Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 2 gamers, warning of phishing attempts. The alert comes after MS appeared to beef up its Xbox Live security last night in the wake of Sony's PlayStation Network breach.
Posting on the Xbox Live Status website, Microsoft stated: "Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2. We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."
The issue has not been linked to any other games or Xbox Live services, and aside from the alert, it's business as usual on Live.
It's worth noting that last night, after Sony announced the personal information of its reported 75 million PSN account holders had been compromised, Microsoft appeared to beef up its own security on Xbox Live.
Members posting on Xbox-Scene and a number of other 360 modding forums reported that their banned consoles had, inexplicably, become unbanned. But the freedom was shortlived, as MS quickly banned the consoles once again.
Microsoft has yet to comment on the blip, but many are attributing it to emergency testing of Xbox Live's security in the wake of Sony's announcement.
