League of Legends: Rumble Released

Get ready to Rumble.

Fans of League of Legends may know that developer Riot Games likes to introduce new champions on a fortnightly cycle. This week's champion is Rumble, the Mechanized Menace, a fuzzy little critter inside a death-machine of doom.

Rumble is what Riot Games designer Phreak calls a "bully," designed to be tougher to kill than your normal damage dealer but with more damage output than your usual initiator. His skills allow for a lot of area-of-effect damage, and a couple of them have built-in snares that slow your opponent down.

Rumble uses a brand new resource called Heat which, unlike any other character in the game, lends well to consistent skill use. As Rumble uses his skills he gains heat. Keeping his heat above 50% enhances all his non-ultimate skills, increasing the damage they deal, the amount they slow or speed up their targets, and the amount of damage they protect against. Hitting 100% heat prevents Rumble from using any of his skills but gives him a melee-attack damage boost (which can be a battle-winner when used properly.

While no individual Rumble skill seems to stick out at this very early stage as being a game changer, his set as a whole looks perfectly tuned for constant early-game harassment and an easy transition into a support role for supplementary damage and slows in group fights. We might be giving Rumble a try in a battle against Riot sometime soon.
