Cannon Fodder 3 Announced

Game set for Russia-only release.

One of the nineties' more fondly remembered series is being revived courtesy of GFI.

Originally released across various platforms in 1993, Cannon Fodder was a top-down shooter that earned plaudits for its darkly humorous view of war.

Russian publisher GFI has just revealed that Cannon Fodder 3 will be played out from an isometric perspective, and will feature destructible environments, weather effects and full 3D, and it promises 'cartoon violence'.

The story sees Europe, Asia and Africa forming a military alliance to establish a dictatorship – and it's up to you and your small band of brothers to bring their plans to an end. It's been confirmed for release on PC and Xbox 360.

It's unclear whether original designer Jon Hare is on board or has given his blessing, and we await further details.

UPDATE: Codemasters - named as a partner in the original press release - has since supplied us with the following statement, distancing themselves from the announcement.

"Codemasters licensed the Cannon Fodder IP to GFI in 2008 under a one-title agreement," it reads, "Under the agreement GFI is designing and developing a new game based on the series for release in Russia and the CIS territories. Codemasters understands that GFI's plans for distribution and release outside of Russia and the CIS have yet to be announced."

IGN is currently trying to attain comment from GFI.
