Treyarch Patches PS3 Version of Call of Duty: Black Ops

Infinity Ward also working on fixes to thwart Modern Warfare 2 hackers.

Less than a day after UK lobbying group Gamers' Voice filed a complaint against Activision for its "unplayable" PC and PlayStation 3 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops, Treyarch has released a patch for the game that appears to address the very issues Gamers' Voice complained about.

Posting on the official Call of Duty: Black Ops forums, Treyarch community manager Josh Olin said Patch 1.06 for the PS3 addresses the freezing, dropping, and connection issues associated with the Black Ops multiplayer. Olin did not reference Gamers' Voice complaint.

"Treyarch is dedicated to ensuring the best gaming experience for the fans, and we've been actively working with you to continue to improve the game based on your feedback," Oline stated. "As always, keep the feedback coming through the community forums."

In a related story, Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling is backtracking on previous comments he made about the flood of hacks and cheats impacting Modern Warfare 2 on the PlayStation 3. Last week, Bowling said Infinity Ward is defenseless against hackers taking advantage of the freshly cracked PS3, and it's up to Sony to resolve the security exploit.

"Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they're played on, therefore, updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform," Bowling wrote in a post on the Infinity Ward forums last week. "Regretfully, Call of Duty games are receiving the bulk of the hackers' attention, due to its high player counts and popularity."

Today, however, Bowling states in another forum post that Infinity Ward will fight the good fight. The developer's "main focus right now" is on preventing hackers from ruining the online experience for legitimate players and helping those whose accounts have already been impacted after playing on hacked servers, he stated.

"I just left a security meeting with the coders here at Infinity Ward where we discussed a lot of solutions," Bowling wrote. "I feel good about the meeting, but of course I can't go into detail on the possible solutions we discussed as we don't want to give out any information that could potentially hinder the security any further."

"The key factor I want you to know is, that while any update takes time, we are looking to make the process as quick as possible and nothing is being left unattended."

Previously, Bowling said to simply avoid public matches and play Modern Warfare 2 only with friends in private matches. Now he recommends players report anyone caught cheating to Sony via this link.
