Sony to Bring PS One Classics to Mobiles Through PlayStation Suite

Android mobiles, smartphones, tablets to get some PlayStation love by the end of 2011.
Sony hedged its hardcore portable gaming bet last night, announcing a new mobile gaming development and distribution system for Android-powered devices at the same press conference where it unveiled its powerful new PSP successor, codename: NGP.

Sony said it will deliver the "PlayStation experience" to mobiles, smart-phones, and tablet PCs through PlayStation Suite, a new initiative that will bring PlayStation content to an open operating system for the first time and bridge the company's casual gaming gap.

"In the dramatically evolving and diversifying mobile market, the number of users who enjoy games casually on a variety of devices including mobile phones, smart-phones and tablet PCs, has been increasing significantly," Sony said in a statement. "By offering PlayStation quality content to this rapidly growing market, SCE will not only deliver the PlayStation experience to a wider base of users around the globe, but will also be able to offer game developers and publishers the potential to further expand their business opportunities to these devices."

Sony said it plans to begin a PlayStation Certified licensing program to offer development support to hardware manufacturers, and original PlayStation games -- namely PS One Classics -- will be available through PS Suite "within this calendar year."

In addition to PS One Classics, Sony is welcoming game developers to create new content to be delivered through PS Suite, and the digital distribution system will be available on the company's just announced new gaming portable, codename: NGP.
