New Mortal Kombat Series Officially Announced

Digital series will delve into the history of the characters.

Confirming the news that broke a couple of weeks ago, Warner Premiere has officially announced a new live-action Mortal Kombat webseries - or, in their terminology, "digital series."

As expected, Kevin Tancharoen will direct, following the positive response to the unofficial short he directed, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, in a bid to get Warner Bros to hire him to direct a new MK film – something that could still happen after this new series.

Says Warners, "Available this spring through online digital retailers from Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, the Mortal Kombat digital series is an anthology of multiple live action shorts, each providing never-before-revealed insights into characters featured in the upcoming videogame as well as the game's universe. Additional details, including casting, will be announced in the coming weeks." The spring debut of the digital series is planned in conjunction with the release of the new Mortal Kombat game, which comes out April 19th.

Warners also says that the series will, "take gamers deep into the history of warriors they know and love such as Scorpion, Johnny Cage and Liu Kang."

Production begins in February in Vancouver. While no casting is announced in the press release, Michael Jai White is expected to reprise his role as Jax from Rebirth, while Ian Anthony Dale has also said he is returning as Scorpion.
