Sony: PSN Could Be Down Until May 31

Sony slams on the restoration breaks for comprehensive testing.

After confidently stating PlayStation Network would be restored for gaming sometime between May 3rd and 7th, Sony now says additional "comprehensive system checks and testing" are required. What's that mean for PS3 gamers? PSN could be down for the entire month of May.

Posting on the official PlayStation Blog, communications director Patrick Seybold said Sony was "unaware of the extent of the attack" on its servers when it announced at its May 1 press conference PSN would be up and running the following week.

"We're still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system," Seybold stated. "Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online."

Seybold refrained from announcing a new targeted restoration date, but in an interview with Bloomberg, Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida said the company plans to fully restart services "by May 31."
