As part of an Activision Blizzard investor call, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime let those on the line know an external beta testing phase will begin in the third quarter of 2011. No word yet on whether it'll be an open beta or closed, but it's yet another indication that Diablo III is moving towards the finish line.
Those waiting for a hard release date will have to keep waiting, unfortunately, as one still has not been announced. Morhaime did say he'd like to see Diablo III ship in 2011, but there's no set date yet in place.
For some perspective, with StarCraft II Blizzard kicked off a public beta testing period in February of 2010, roughly five months before the game was eventually released in late July of the same year.
