THQ Announces Metro: Last Light

Post-apocalyptic shooter sequel set for release in 2012.

It's not Metro 2033 2 or Metro 2034, it's Metro: Last Light, and developer 4A Games promises the sequel will improve on the original Russian post-apocalyptic shooter in every way when it launches next year.

Publisher THQ and 4A describe Last Light as a "terrifying, atmospheric single-player adventure" that fuses combat with exploration and survival horror to create a memorable experience. And after the single-player adventure is completed, the battle will continue online in the franchise's new multiplayer mode. Get a glimpse at what's to come in the debut trailer:

"We believe that Metro 2033 was a flawed masterpiece," THQ Core Games VP Danny Bilson said in a statement. "It was a beautiful, original game that didn't get the marketing support it needed. We won't make that mistake with Metro: Last Light."

A synopsis of the Last Light storyline from 4A:
It is the year 2034. Beneath the ruins of post-apocalyptic Moscow, in the tunnels of the Metro, the remnants of mankind are besieged by deadly threats from outside -- and within. Mutants stalk the catacombs beneath the desolate surface, and hunt amidst the poisoned skies above. But rather than stand united, the station-cities of the Metro are locked in a struggle for the ultimate power, a doomsday device from the military vaults of D6. A civil war is stirring that could wipe humanity from the face of the earth forever. As Artyom, burdened by guilt but driven by hope, you hold the key to our survival -- the last light in our darkest hour…
A gameplay demonstration is scheduled for E3 in Los Angeles next week, THQ said, promising to show off a title that sets a new benchmark for graphical excellence on PC and consoles.

"This game improves on the original in every way -- it will have more polish, deeper and more sophisticated gameplay, and satisfyingly visceral combat, without losing what our fans loved about the original," Bilson said.

Metro: Last Light is being developed for Windows PCs, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The game is slated for a 2012 release.
